She got so excited. I love how excited muslims get when they find another muslim. Its like when a Catholic finds another Catholic. I would have never guessed they were muslim though, since she doesn't wear a scarf and wears American clothes just like everyone else (short sleeves, regular jeans etc). Who knew?
Other randomness:
Its weird when you are the only hijabi at the super market even though you live in a neighborhood with a lot of muslims.
Mango juice rules and I will in fact walk 20 blocks to get the giant bottle. Then again it was over 50 degrees in the middle of winter today.
Indians and Pakistanis have the best clothes ever! Sometimes I wish I wasn't so white so I could wear Shalwar Kameez but alas I would look ridiculous. Love the colors.
I want to know how to use a square scarf. I see these girls and they looks so cute but I have no idea how to wear one! I know how to do the Turkish style (which looks great but feels like it is choking me) and the basic "throw it on your head pin it under your chin" look. Anyone have a video "how to" they can recommend?
Ahh the wonder of mango juice. Beware of the Mexican mango juice though. It sucks and tastes nothing like the ones from the Middle East. I have no idea why though.
ReplyDeleteFor the square scarf, I fold mine off center so the top triangle overlaps the bottom by a lot. start with it off center on your head. wrap it around and pin it on the top of your head. Then pin the end near your ear where the scarf ends. Hope that makes sense without a pic. Its basically creating more length with the square so you can wrap it all the way and pin on top.
Stacy: Thanks! I have done it that way, it looks nice. I wish I could take a pic of how some of these girls do theirs....but that would be weird LOL
ReplyDeleteLK, If I - pale and on top of that over 6 feet tall - can get away with shalwar kameez, so can you :D I had the thing custom stitched by a firm I found on Ebay. Only reason I'm not wearing it right now is because it's too **** cold at the moment where I live. But come summer??? Another matter entirely :D Might even have more made if I find something pretty and decide that's where my money ought to go :)
ReplyDeleteCaraboska: LOL well I stand corrected :)
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool about your supervisor and his wife being from Syria! I wonder where. :) If they weren't speaking Arabic, I wonder if they are Kurds or or or ... I'm trying to think what else they could have been speaking there. Turkish? Ha, ha...ummmm. *thinking*
ReplyDeleteMaybe they are not really religious Muslims. There are some in Syria who may consider themselves Muslim, but the mainstream Muslims consider them more as sects of Islam - like the Druze and Alawaites for instance. You can tell I am interested in your mentioning of Syria, huh? Well, it's the only Middle Eastern country that I've visited so . . . :)
I need to see what shalwar kameez is. Oh, I just did a google search. How pretty! I don't know why your being white would make you not want to wear one. The colors would add a lovely glow to your face! :)
Glad you enjoy mango juice. I don't think I've had it and feel I'm missing out now.
Enjoyed this "randomness" post!
Susanne: haha I have no idea but I know it wasn't Arabic. It sounds Slavic. Not sure because there is another muslim woman in my building who speaks the same language...the super's wife and her are friends. Its just so funny because I've lived here for over a year and had no idea! And they live down the hall from me!
ReplyDeleteI feel funny O_O And I really don't care for the poofy pant kind. I feel like I'm trying to be Aladdin. I'd like to get an all white one with trouser style pants. I own one Shalwar Kameez because I fell in love with it. Its shiny, blue, and made of silk. I may save it for Eid, perfect for hot weather. Its sooooo pretty....I should photograph it at some point. That is, if I ever find my camera again LOL The rug pic was taken with my phone!
Hey, wear a salwar kameez! If I can, you can. They're epic comfortable and totally cute. : )
