Prayer Rug :)

My Love said he had a surprise for me so he dropped by today. And guess what it was?

PRAYER RUG!

I had been praying on a fleece blanket. Which is comfy sure but a little slippery when you try to get up from sitting or sujood. I almost fell once O_O. His family happened to have an extra one so he gave it to me along with a turbah

Interjection:

A turbah is piece of clay from Karbala that Shias prostrate on. It is to remind one that as we came from the earth, we shall return to it. Also, it is to make sure one is prostrating on pure, clean earth and to a Shia no earth can be purer than that of battlefield of Karbala. It is also in remembrance of Muhammad and the Ahlul Bayt and Imam Husayn. For more info please visit: Why Do Shias Prostrate on Turbah?

Anywho I am so happy!!!!! It will be so nice to be able to use a rug. And its blue my fav color wooo! Too bad I have to wait 4 more days to use it. I just learned the Adhan too. Figures....

Salaam

  2. Thanks for the info on the Turbah too. I knew that Shia make sujood on a piece of clay, but I never knew the significance of it.

  3. Awww! That's so great! I looove prayer rugs, I only have two but wow. They're so cheap overseas too - I remember getting a beautiful one for the equivalent of $6 AUD in Dubai :| If you're still learning to pray, you can get turbahs that come with a counter thing too, so they tell you how many rakats you need to do lol!

  8. Whee! What a nice present!

And that's very interesting about the turbah.

Without knowing exactly where the Kaaba is, directionally, can you just face east, generally? (Or you know, for those on the *other* side of the world, west.)

  9. My maternal grandmother's step-sister (who was born Coptic and converted to Shia Islam) brought her turbah once to pray in our house and I ate it :D

    She never visited us again.

    I believe I'm so holy!

  10. Amber: Um maybe? Your prayers aren't considered invalid if you have no clue how to find the Kaaba. So I could try that :)

Achelois: ROTFL I almost spit out my coffee! Did you know that if you eat a fingers length of the dirt from Karbala you will be instantly cured from whatever ails you? You should be SUPER healthy LOL JK

  11. At least that way you're facing in the generally right direction.

Funny story (probably only to me...), when I was in RCIA we were taking a tour of the church and the deacon was explaining to us how churches are supposed to be built facing east (with the altar in the east, and all the pews facing the altar) (and in the Latin Mass, the priest faces east too, but that's neither here nor there...), and he mentioned that Muslims pray facing east too! (Aren't we all just shiny and special?)

And I corrected him, saying, no, they pray facing Mecca, which just happens to be east of us. And he argued with me, *insisting* that no, they all pray *east*! Mecca or no Mecca! *grumbles* I went in the next week with documentation to prove him wrong.

  13. I believe where you live you pray in a general northeast direction (something to do with the curvature of the earth, so even though Makkah is southeast of us, it is actually closer if you pray northeast).

  14. What a pretty, pretty rug!!

OK, impress your Love with this - the prayer rug is called 'jaa-namaaz' in Urdu :D You can thank him by saying, "jaa-namaaz kay lee-ye shukriya" (thank you for the prayer rug).

Tell me if he likes your Urdu :)

  15. Achelois: Teehee LOL I might have to try that!

  17. You don't need a compass - use this:
    http://www.qiblalocator.com
Zooming in on your house and using satellite mode, you can *see* which way to pray! So awesome. :)

  18. That was very nice of him! A friend of mine bought me one, too, a really pretty aqua blue one with black detailing from www.alhannah.com. (Sorry, couldn't find it on the site. Maybe they sold out?)
