It starts on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah, and today is the 20th of Dhu al-Hijjah. One website said that it is commemorated for 3 days, so if that's true than it is going on right now. I don't follow the Shi'a school of thought, so I don't know for sure. According to a semi-trusty source (Wikipedia <3) it is commemorating the last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (saw). What do you know about it?
My Shia friends arent doing anything for it...I have a feeling you don't actually do anything LOL Yes you are correct. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eid_al-Ghadeer
I figured there would be something, even just a speech but it seems nothing is going on. That, or my friends just don't observe it. I'll have to check the youtube channel for the local mosque (Yes the mosque in my neighborhood broadcasts its presentations on Youtube).
Candice: Its a Shia thing. Its mostly about Muhammad (PBUH) selecting Imam Ali (PBUH) as his successor. The Sunnis would not partake in such a celebration since they do not believe Imam Ali was the prophet's successor.
Sadly, I get a lot of my information from Wikipedia and people's blogs. :P I do try to compare it to reliable sources to make sure that what's being said is correct.
Nikki - I still get so confused when stuff is lol All I know is, no one I know is observing it currently. I'll have try and catch it next year. We are already preparing for next week when Muharram starts.
if you want you can try subscribing to a shia mosque in your time zone that follows your marja. im not sure where you are at or i'd give you the names of some masjid's websites but im sure you can google it. my masjid is starting muharram services dec. 17th so of course the end of those first 10 days will be the 27th.
