I don't know what to do for Lent. Yes I know you want to go "You are barely Christian, why are you doing Lent?" Well I still think its important. In fact, I have discovered more importance behind Lent in the past year. It covers so many things. 40 days Jesus battled the Devil. 40 days of Moses in the dessert. Its also the waiting period for the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. I'm sure my Christian readers can elaborate.
And yes there are 40 days, Sundays to do not count. My Dad gave up beer last year and felt that because Sundays don't count he could drink on Sunday....um no Dad no.
I guess I could give up chocolate if Sundays don't count....No that's cheating....
Anyway,
During Lent you usually give something up for the 40s days. But I don't know what to give up. I will probably try to do halal meat only again like last year. I thought about chocolate but that's just really painful....REALLY painful. I also thought about dedicating my reading to Jesus related books and taking another look at the Bible. Of course, I will do the no meat on Fridays.

What are you doing for Lent? Any suggestions?

We were never taught about Lent and I don't know anyone who does it... If Sundays don't count why can't you take the thing you're giving up on that day??
ReplyDeleteCandice: It just seems like cheating......I dunno one of the priests at my parents church said you could break it on sunday, another said no. I didn't even learn about this neat little fact until 2 years ago.
ReplyDeleteAmber what say you? LOL
Because the giving up of something 'extra' during the period of Lent is considered a private, personal devotion, there aren't really any hard and fast rules. The fast during Lent is a requirement, barring medical needs that prevent one from keeping it, but no one has to give up anything for Lent. Of course, most people do at least give up a token something for the period.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I also see indulging in whatever I sacrifice for Lent on Sundays as 'cheating'. For me. What I sacrifice, I sacrifice for the entire period. Even though they don't 'count' the Sundays when figuring out the beginning of Lent, they are still a part of the Lenten season.
I was taught to give something up that TRULY mattered to me. So i guess give up chocolate if it means so much to you. *don't kill me!*
ReplyDeleteI didn't grow up in a Church that did Lent either. If the chocolate means so much to you, i would do that. Another idea is that you could do Islamic-style fasting maybe 2 days a week during the entire lent period.
ReplyDeleteI love chocolate :( It's probably the best thing to try though. Im not attached to much so its hard to find something to give up. Like I could give up drawing or watching DVDs but that seems kinda pointless. And giving up drawing is really unproductive. I was going to do the same thing (Give up an item) for Ramadan as well since I cant fast. Give up chocolate twice AHHHHHH. I have a week to get rid of all the chocolate in my house.....oh dear....
ReplyDeleteAmber: Yeah I agree it may not be technically cheating but I feel like it is. This could be a hard 40 days especially if My Love buys me chocolate for valentines......
Wow, I admire you for giving up something for Lent even though you don't have to. I think the point of it is to sacrifice something you really enjoy maybe like solidarity or remembrance of what others sacrificed. My church didn't teach about this so maybe I'm totally wrong. I had a friend who used to fast each Thursday from the computer so maybe a fast from something like that would work for you as well. I think it would be great to read stories pertaining to Jesus during this time. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm keeping Lent this year and I'm proudly giving up chocolates :D
ReplyDeleteI will also fast on Sundays from morninging till around 4.00 PM and give up Internet on Saturday. Let's see how it goes.
Achelois: You can do it!
