Answers to Najis

This is Sr. A's answer:

Regarding the dog's question, you need to just wash your hand for example. If it sits on your lap, you need to wash your dress or legs if it touch the dog. It is a difficult situation, because anywhere the dog sits or stands, is considered najis. You can sit on the same couch(which the dog sits on) for e.g. as long as you are not wet or the couch is wet, the same story is with the bed ....etc. Of course, also its hair , body fluids ...etc all are najis.

So you do have to be wet for you to have an issue with the dog. Or the dog has to be wet or the object the dog touched has to be wet. So I guess I dont see the issue then. The fur is najis which causes the main problem. If you are so much as moist and the fur comes in contact with you, you need to wash.

Cats are not najis, i know this for sure, that's why many muslims have them inside the house. I am not why? it is better than the dog? I am not a big fan of animals, so that's why I never had interest in them or knowing about them, but we can look it up :)) and learn.

Soooo my only conclusion can be that somehow cat meat is halal because they do gush blood. OR their fur is not najis like a dog is. Only their fluids which would pretty much never cause a problem. But I would think you should still pray in a place where there is no fur.

She gave me two reference websites: www.najaf.org and through the same website you can go to the link regarding the code of practice; http://www.najaf.org/all/index.php?l=ENG&c=code&to=COD
This rulings according to Ayatullah Al sistani.

  2. Salaam sis!
One reason in particular that dogs dont live in houses (especially overnight) is because of angels. Angels will not enter a house with a dog inside

  3. Elizabeth: I take that as a complete superstition. I can't accept that as true but I'm sure that is why some people do not have them in their house.

  4. From a sunni perspective, we have 2 opinions - one that what sheds from a cat is najas, and one that it is not. Alhamdulilah for the diversity of opinions, as we can find a mercy in them. I'm constantly covered in cat hair, so if I followed the ruling that it's najas, I'd have to change clothes when I pray. As it is, we still usually pray in a room the kitty's not in, as she likes to splay herself across any prayer rug we spread out

  5. Rahma: Welcome. Yes I have heard both opinions. Sis (she is Shia) said cats were najis and although their hair might not be you still should not have it on you when you pray. Sr. A (also shia) thought they were completely Pak.

Teehee kitty on the rug. They love to lay where they should not be :)

Cats (especially inside ones) are going to be generally cleaner than a dog. I think that has a lot ot do with it. But it would be nice if people wouldn't freak out so much about dogs! Superstitions can be dangerous

  6. I wouldn't necessarily call it a superstition, as the hadith related to dogs are considered sound, at least for sunnis. But I will agree that (some) muslims need to calm down when it comes to dogs. Yes, it sucks if they touch you and you have to wash, but that's no reason to shriek and cower when a guide dog gets on the bus near you.
