Article: Mos(que) Hysteria

Villager

This I just can't understand. Thousands of people are up in arms because a group of Muslims want to build a center near the World Trade Center that promotes unity, understanding, and peace. And somehow, because it is attached to Islam, it doesn't belong there. Because apparently thousands of people think all Muslims are terrorists and don't belong within reach of WTC. They are trying to counteract and condemn the people who bombed the WTC but does anyone hear that? No. All they hear is Islam and Islam equals Terrorism. I am well aware of what happened on 9/11. I live here, I get it. But they want to fix what these people did and better the community. What is wrong with that?

This kind of thing I will never understand.

  1. there needs to be a better word for discrimination due to religion. I want to call it racism because it is disgustingly similar, but it just doesn't seem to fit. Honestly they don't care what race you are, just that you call the One God Allah.

  2. Sigh. I understand why people would be upset about a mosque because it brings up old wounds, but to deny an entire group of people something that will probably make the community better just because this group is the same religion as the terrorists is supremely unfair and wrong. I actually think having a mosque there would be a great way for people to learn more about what Islam really is like and how it thoroughly condemns what these cowardly men did. I would not be opposed to a Japanese cultural center near Pearl Harbor; on the contrary, I would welcome it because it shows that one small group of people does not speak for an entire people.
